Metal by era and traces of manufacture

Many Luang Phor Kasem coins were made by disciples and organisations, for example the Kong Phan Lampang (Lampang Battalion) coin of BE 2517 (1974), made by a close disciple with the Lampang Military District for soldiers: 2,513 coins, with "23 Oct 17" inscribed on the back.

The Kong Phan Lampang batch was made in gold, silver, nawa (nine-metal alloy) and copper. They are stamped, so look at the lines, the edge and the metal surface for each material.

His sacred objects were made during his lifetime (BE 2455–2539, 1912–1996) in many batches and materials, so study each batch separately and compare with pieces in the same group.

In general, metals form natural surface layers in different ways: copper, brass and bronze tend to develop a dark-brown oxide and sometimes green deposits; silver tarnishes brown to black; lead and lead–tin (chin) show white-grey deposits. Students look at whether these layers are continuous and natural between deep recesses and high points. Macro photos can only show whether what is visible is consistent with metal of the period; they cannot state a year of making.
